Writing and Literature
Grammar is taught separately from writing in a logical, sequential way that enhances writing skills. Don't be surprised if Grammar becomes one of your child's favorite subjects in school. It all depends on how a topic is presented!
Specific time is devoted every day for writing instruction. Notice the words writing instruction. Journal writing, free writing, or other "methods" of providing writing time during the school day do nothing to make for better writing. There is nothing wrong with these activities, but writing is complicated. Children at Bright Minds Academy will be instructed methodically and with a purpose through copy work, dictation and narration.
Often overlooked in today's classrooms, at Bright Minds we ensure that all students learn proper techniques and are offered plenty of practice time.
Students will read books written by the masters. Unlike reading programs that provide "stories" written by the text book company authors, children read real literature that has passed the test of time.
Greek and Latin roots, prefixes, suffixes ... Students are presented with a small number of words each week, but through these words, many other words will be learned. Students are taught how to spell beyond just memorizing a list of random words.
All students, regardless of age, will be studying Ancient History this year. Second through eighth grade students learn Ancient History together but at different depths of knowledge. Like our Science curriculum, History is taught using a three-year cycle as well. Younger students will revisit Ancient History again after a year of European History and a year of American History.
The importance of Geography is overlooked in public schools today because it isn't tested on the ISTEP. At Bright Minds Academy, knowing where continents, countries, cities, and major landforms and bodies of water lie, is an important component of a well-rounded curriculum regardless of standardized testing. Students will use maps and globes throughout the year on a regular basis.
Math and Science
Yes, we memorize our facts! Facts need to become second nature for solving in-depth problems. The highly rated Singapore Math Curriculum will be used to teach math from the basics through complicated problem solving.
Science is taught in a three-year cycle which includes Earth Science, Life Science and Physical Science. Students of all ages will be studying the same topics at the same time but at different levels. With the three-year cycle, students will revisit topics at a deeper level as they progress.
